Young Dancers painting on slate
Based on late prehistoric art from southern Spain and Saharan Africa, this painting is my own composition. Rituals were an important part of prehistoric society, and bone flutes are among some of the oldest non-stone artifacts. We will never know what early people’s rituals were, but, where there was music, there must have been dancing! Life in prehistoric times was short and unpredictable, so moments of joy must have been lived to the fullest, which I hope my young dancers convey.
Burnt umber paint is blown and hand-painted onto stone, then I carve into the stone sharpening the edges and creating detail, recreating in miniature the art techniques of the first artists. I shape and weather the stone to its unique shape by hand. The pigment paint is light-fast, so with care this stone painting will survive for thousands of years!
The stone is approx. 10" x 4.75" (25.6 x 12 cm). The painting is signed on the back and has a hanging wire secured on the back. The painting also comes with a brief story card.
About the stone...
This stone is called French Vanilla slate. It has a mottled texture of gold, dark cream and light grey. I like the gentle arch of the stone over the dancers.
