Sulawesi Buffalo Hunters cave scene

This painting recreates a hunting scene from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi; a cave called Leang Bulu’ Sipong 4. A group of small part-human, part-animal figures is apparently capturing an anoa (a buffalo-like creature native to Sulawesi) with what seem to be ropes or spears. At 44,000 years or more, this is (so far) the oldest depiction of imagined human-animal beings called therianthropes. I especially like the sketchy quality of the humanoid hunters and the carefully finger-brushed anoa.

  • About the stone...

    This painting is on a lustrous piece of quartzite. The main color is bronze and the stone catches the light with a silver and gold mica shimmer. I use a mix of carbon black and red oxide earth pigment paint to recreate as closely as I can the art of the first artists. The size of the stone is
