Stone topped acacia salt box with Lascaux Reindeer painting
This is an interpretation of one of Reindeer of Lascaux as I imagine it might have looked freshly painted 15,000 years ago. Burnt umber paint is blown onto the stone, and the outline is emphasized by scraping lines (sgraffito) into the surface; the same techniques used by prehistoric artists.
The Arizona sandstone color is a warm terracotta. I hand cut the stone in to a circle, so the edge is a little irregular. I don't usually put varnish on my stone paintings, but I put a light invisible spray of archival varnish on this stone so that it may safely be wiped clean and withstand gentle handling. The stone begs to be touched!
About the box...
The acacia wood box has a one-handed twist opening with a magnetic closure. The box has a 3.5" diameter and is 2.67" tall (9 cm dia. by 6.7 cm tall). The space inside the box is 2.75" diameter and is 1.5" tall (7cm dia. x 4.3 cm). It's signed on the bottom to keep up the illusion of being an ancient artifact.
This salt box comes filled with a bag of organic sea salt.
