Rock Climber painting on slate

Rock Climber painting on slate

This design came about from watching rock climbers tackle artificial boulders. What if artificial climbers tackled real rock, with ledges and cracks they could hang on to? I sort through tons of rock looking for the perfect rock wall for the tiny climber to traverse. The figure is painted with natural burnt umber pigment, then I carve in to the surface of the stone to bring the outline of the figure out in more detail.

Airbrush, hand painting and carving to create detail, similar to the methods of paleolithic artists.

Size is approx. 6.25" x 8.5".

  • About the stone...

This piece of slate has very unique layers. The thick ledge is a light brown and gold, The set back cliff is an almost sea green with layer stripes on the edges.
