Rock Climber painting on "fossil" sandstone
This design came about from watching rock climbers tackle artificial boulders. What if artificial climbers tackled real rock, with ledges and cracks they could hang on to? I sort through tons of rock looking for the perfect rock wall for the tiny climber to traverse. The figure is painted with natural burnt umber pigment, then I carve in to the surface of the stone to bring the outline of the figure out in more detail.
Airbrush, hand painting and carving to create detail, similar to the methods of paleolithic artists.
Size is approx. 11.25" x 8.25" (21 x 28.5 cm).
About the stone...
This piece of Fossil sand stone is dark cream and gold with bronze and cinnamon "freckles". It has a very subtle overall silver mica shimmer. There are mineral "fossil plants" along the top that remind me of ferns hanging from a canyon wall. The climber appears to be hanging over infinity as she reaches up to a ledge.
