Pech Merle Ponies painting on slate
This is a small reproduction of the nearly life-size horse paintings from the beautiful cave of Pech-Merle in the south of France. My idea was to make them look as they did freshly painted 20,000 years ago. Iron oxide and black manganese paint are blown onto stone, and spots are hand-daubed on, recreating in miniature the art techniques of the first artists.

About the stone...
This stone is a Called French Vanilla slate. It is naturally weathered to this beautiful shape. The color is dark cream with a spattering of gold and an unusual purple mineral band along the left side. I thought this stone looked a lot like the actual walls of Pech Merle cave and complimented the horses.
