Owl primitive painting on slate
There aren't many paintings of owls in European cave art, and they tend to be in a simple finger paint style, so I decided to create my own owl design based on paleolithic techniques. The look, with my interest in feather pattern, may be a bit modern, but I hope, keeps the feel of very ancient art.
Burnt umber paint is blown and hand painted on to the stone, then I carve into the surface of the stone to create lighter areas and detailed line work. The pigment is earth-based, so this painting could survive for 30,000 years, just like the first cave art.Siz is approx. 5.5" x 8.25".
About the stone...
This is a beautiful warm piece of slate in colors of gold, bronze and terracotta. There are some dark mineral freckles and "fossil" plants.
