Mammoth stone magnet
This painting is inspired by the many, many mammoth line drawings in the cave of Rouffignac in France, a fascinating eyewitness account of a vanished world. Burnt umber paint is blown onto the stone, then I carve in to the surface to create light lines and texture, and hand paint detail lines, recreating in miniature the art techniques of the first artists. The paint is earth pigment water-based, and light fast. With care, this stone painting will last as long as the original cave art!
