Lascaux Megaloceros painting on sandstone
This is a reproduction of a Lascaux giant deer as I imagine it might have looked, freshly painted 15,000 years ago. Raw umber paint is blown onto the stone. In some places I use my hand as a mask just as cave artists did, recreating in miniature the art techniques of the first artists.
Blown paint, hand painting and carving.
Size approx. 10.25" x 11.25”
About the stone...
This stone is called Fossil Sandstone. It is a dark cream with cinnamon colored freckles. The "fossil" in the name is from mineralization that looks something like fossil plants that create a landscape in the lower half of the painting for the deer.
