Lascaux Giant Deer Stone Ornament
This is a reproduction of an extinct Lascaux deer called Megaloceros, as I imagine it might have looked, freshly painted 15,000 years ago. Burnt sienna pigment paint is blown and hand-painted onto stone, then I carve in to the surface of the stone to create detail, recreating in miniature the art techniques of the first artists. The earth pigment paint I use can handle direct sunlight, and, with care, could last another 15,000 years!
Smaller versions of my wall hanging stones, these are sized to fit on a tree, window shade pull, lamp base, you name it. They are painted on the front only, with a "d"-ring attached to the back and a leather cord included. It is signed on the back to keep up the illusion of being a lost fragment of prehistoric art.
Airbrush, hand painting and carving on sandstone.
About the stone...
The stone is piece of sandstone is a blend of chocolate brown, gold, off-white minerals and subtle silver mica shimmer. The shape made me think of a painting created on a stalagtite. This ornament measures 2.75" wide by 7" high with a leather cord that extends up another 4.5".
