Lascaux Bison painting on fossil sandstone

Lascaux Bison painting on fossil sandstone

This is a reproduction of a Lascaux bison as I imagine it might have looked, freshly painted 15,000 years ago. Red iron oxide and black manganese pigment paint are blown and hand-painted onto stone, then I carve in to the surface of the stone to engrave lines for detail and definition, recreating in miniature the art techniques of paleolithic artists.

  • About the stone...

This stone is called Fossil Sandstone. It is dark cream with dark grey mineralization that looks something like fossil plants. There is an overall subtle silvery mica sheen.

    The stone measures 11.75" x 6.75".
