Large Fishing painting on quartzite
Fish played a very important part in primitive man's life. Fish bones are abundantly found in the middens of paleolithic peoples. Images of fish appear in cave art from about 20,000 years ago. In this painting, I am imagining how early cave artists would have represented the mysterious salmon, based on a carved relief from Les Eyzies, France.
I use the same earth-based pigments that cave artists used, with techniques as similar as possible. Paint is blown and hand-painted on to the stone, then I carve in to the surface to create fine details. Kept out of the elements, this stone painting could survive another 20,000 years!
This is a new larger version of a fishing design I've done for years. The painting measures 9" by 16". It is signed on the back to keep the illusion of being a fragment of ancient art, and has a hanging wire secured on the back. The stone comes with an information card which gives a brief story about the art and techniques.
About the stone...
This stone is a California quartzite. It is a pearly silver and white with a bronze ripple along the bottom and subtle washes of gold. This stone is naturally weathered to a shape that fits the figures well.
