Font de Gaume Reindeer stone painting
This is a reproduction of a pair of reindeer from the famous cave of Font de Gaume in the Dordogne region of France, as I imagine they might have looked freshly painted 17,000 years ago. Iron oxide and carbon black are blown and hand-painted onto the stone, then I carve in details, recreating in miniature the art techniques of the first artists.
Approx. size 12.75” x 9"
About the stone...
This stone is a gold sandstone. The color is a subtle mix of bronze and gold with a silvery mica shimmer.
