Lascaux Megaloceros painting on sandstone

Lascaux Megaloceros painting on sandstone

This is a reproduction of a Lascaux giant deer as I imagine it might have looked, freshly painted 15,000 years ago. Raw umber paint is blown onto the stone. In some places I use my hand as a mask just as cave artists did, recreating in miniature the art techniques of the first artists.

Blown paint, hand painting  and carving.

Size approx. 9.25" x 12”

  • About the stone...

This stone is a California gold Sandstone. It has a subtle banding of gold, bronze and cinnamon with a gentle silver mica shine that create a landscape for the deer.
