Bull Hunters painting on "fossil" sandstone
This stone painting is my own composition based on figures from cave art of Spain and France. The aurochs was a truly terrifying ancestor to modern cattle, who lived in forests and actively hunted people down. That created ambiguity in the title as who is the hunter and who the hunted.
I use the same techniques and pigments that paleolithic artists used. Red iron oxide, black manganese and burnt umber paint are airbrushed and hand-painted on to the stone, then I carve in detail lines, recreating a miniature "lost" ice age cave wall. The paints are earth-based and light fast, so with care could last another 15,000 years!
Airbrush, hand brush and sgraffito on quartzite.

About the stone...
This stone is called "fossil" sandstone. It is dark cream and gold with arching stripes of darker gold and darker gold and grey "freckes". It has mineral shapes that look like fossil plants running through the middle of the stone. With the figures dancing around the aurochs it all creates a lively scene.
